8. Koza Pork

Pig farming became very popular during the early 20th century in Koza County (currently the Ayase City area), which was located in central Kanagawa Prefecture. Soon afterward, Koza pork developed a nationwide reputation for its good quality and excellent flavor. At present, a number of popular processed foods utilize pork from this area, including ham and sausage.

 

9. Misaki Tuna

Tuna landed at Misaki Port, a fishing harbor located at the southernmost tip of the Miura Peninsula in southeast Kanagawa Prefecture, is called “Misaki tuna.” Misaki tuna includes many types of tuna from different parts of the world, and this diversity is one of its major characteristics. A morning market is held around the port, where visitors can purchase seafood and sample a variety of tuna dishes. Sushi made with Misaki tuna is especially good!

 

10. Shonan Shirasu

Shirasu is anchovy larva boiled in salt and laid out to dry. It is eaten seasoned with soy sauce. The Shonan area, located in the south of Kanagawa Prefecture facing Sagami Bay, is famous for shirasu. Though the shirasu of the region is often processed by sun drying or other means, it can also be eaten raw, and this is a special treat that can only be enjoyed on the day it was caught.
