Setsubun Festival : February 3 (Weds)

“Mame-maki” (bean tossing) will be held at various shrines and temples to celebrate the return of spring.

Valentine Island Enoshima 2010 - Jewel of Shonan:
February 6 (Sat) to February 14 (Sun)

Location: Fujisawa-City, Enoshima Lighthouse, Enoshima Aquarium


The Samuel Cocking Garden located at the highest point of Enoshima will be decorated by a large number of mirror balls producing artistic lighting effects. The Enoshima Lighthouse will also be lit up in honor of Valentine’s Day, light balloon art will be displayed, and other events will be held.

Miyagase Valentine Week 2010:
February 6 (Sat) to February 14 (Sun)

Location: Kiyokawa-Town, Miyagase/Miyagase Lake Side Area/Around Mizo no Sato


A large illuminated display, including a giant heart 100m in diameter, will be lit up on the Miyagase Lake Side every day of the event. During the evening, a large fountain called “rainbow fairy” will also be operated.

Memorial Service for Old Needles: February 8 (Mon)

Broken and bent needles are stuck into tofu, and a service is held to pray for peace and improvement of dressmaking skill.

Daikokutoe (Asceticism): February 11 (Holiday)

Location: Chosho-ji Temple, Zaimokuza, Kamakura-City


Approximately twenty Buddhist monks who have completed one hundred days of severe ascetic training will stand in the cold wind at the water basin within the precincts of Chosho-ji temple and pour cold water all over their bodies while chanting sutras to pray for world peace and human happiness.

Yozuku “One Million Buddhist Prayers”:
February 13 (Sat) to February 14 (Sun)

Location: Noan-ji Temple, Mukohara, Yamakita-Town


Yamakita-Town’s Buddhist Prayer Ritual is said to have been practiced for six hundred years. This is a unique event not seen anywhere else in the country, featuring rosary beads (approximately nine meters long) which are attached to a large pulley and then rotated by robust young men. Lion Dances and Asobi Kagura dances will also be featured.

2010 Shunsetsu:

A splendid event held in Yokohama’s Chinatown to celebrate the Lunar New Year. “Saichin,” an event to celebrate the New Year and pray for business success where lion dancers visit each shop and take the “goshugi” decoration hung in the storefronts, will be held. Traditional Chinese performance art (Chinese opera, Zatsugi acrobatics, instrumental performances, calligraphy, etc.) will also take place along with a “shukumai yuko” dance parade and other events.

Seto Yashiki Hina Matsuri: February 16 (Tues) to March 7(Sun)

Location: Ashigarigo Seto Yashiki, Kanaishima, Kaisei-Town


The Sedo Yashiki is a three hundred year old building that used to belong to the village headman. Hina Matsuri (the Girls’ Festival) will be celebrated with a display of emperor and empress dolls from the Seto Yashiki collection, many sets of hina decorations, and over seven thousand tsurushi-bina hanging decorations made by a local women’s association. Entrance fee of \300 applies; junior high school age and younger children enter for free.

Tauchimai Shinto Ritual: February 17 (Wed)

Location: Samukawa-jinja Shrine, Miyayama, Samukawa-Town


The dance performed at Samukawa-jinja Shrine’s festival at the beginning of the year to pray for good crops is also known as “good fortune sowing.” At the main shrine, staff and priests wear old man Noh masks and dance to Kagura music while using implements such as sickles and spades to harvest rice stalks from the fields and pray for an abundant harvest.

Plum festival at Yugawara Plum Orchard:
February 6 (Sat) to March 14 (Sun)

Location: Yugawara Plum Orchard (Makuyama Park)


Around 4,000 red and white plum trees bloom in this plum orchard, which is filled with the subtle scent of plum. The trees are lit up starting on February 20 from evening until 9 p.m., creating a magical atmosphere.
