Oiso "Shukuba" Post Station Festival : November 1 (Sun)

Location: Old Tokaido Matsunamiki street, Sanno-cho, Oiso Town


The active life of the Edo period will be recreated in this festival at the Oiso "shukuba," the eighth of the fifty-three post stations along the Tokaido route from Edo. The festival features street markets from routes all over Japan selling their special products, amateur performances at playhouses, traditional entertainments, wind instrument music, costume contests where participants compete to recreate the atmosphere and appearance of people that traveled the Tokaido route during the Edo period, “shop contests” where street markets and tea houses compete with one another over the splendor of their performances, and much more.

Houmotsu Kaza Ire : November 1 (Sun) to November 3 (Holiday)

Location: Enkaku-ji Temple and Kenchou-ji Temple, Yamanouchi, Kamakura-City


“Houmotsu Kaza Ire” is a yearly ritual where the treasures possessed by Enkaku-ji Temple and Kenchou-ji Temple are aired in the wind to prevent insects. Precious items usually not available to see are brought out for public view during these days. In addition, the National Treasure “Shari-den” at Enkaku-ji Temple and the ceiling painting “Unryu-zu” at Kencho-ji Temple are also available to view during this time.

Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum Festival and Folk Entertainment Performances:
November 3 (Holiday)



Location: Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum, Masugata, Tama-Ward, Kawasaki-City


Events include children’s kabuki performances, as well as displays of old-fashioned games inside the park. Visitors can also try out straw implements and clothing, wear haori (kimono jackets), and see live displays of traditional crafts (making Domiya carvings and Ichimatsu dolls), and more. Admission is free on the 3rd (holiday).

Hakone Daimyou Procession : November 3 (Holiday)

Location: Yumoto Onsen Town, Hakone-Town


This flamboyant daimyou (feudal lord) procession is held in Hakone Yumoto Onsen Town. The approximately 170-person procession will feature heralds, people carrying lacquered boxes and lances, musket corps, royal palanquin bearers, house maids, and chamber maids. This event also includes a colorful parade of approximately 110 Yumoto geiko (geisha) doing te-odori dance and a brass band. Keyari lance performances held midway are also not to be missed.

Murou-jinja Shrine Yabusame (Horseback Archery):
November 3 (Holiday)

Location: Murou-jinja Shrine, Yamakita-Town


Dedication rituals performed during the annual festival of Murou-jinja Shrine include demonstrations of yabusame in which mounted archers shoot at three targets with arrows. The mounted archery at Murou-jinja Shrine is unique, as it features pairs of horses with a leading horse.

Atsugi International Street Performance Festival:
November 7 (Sat) to November 8 (Sun)

Location:
The area around Hon-Atsugi Station on the Odakyu Line, Atsugi-City


Various street performances by street artists representing Japan as well as approximately forty groups visiting from other countries will be put on at thirteen different locations in the area around Hon-Atsugi Station including parks and street corners. On the Saturday the 7th, an array of performances will continue into the evening.

Ootori-jinja Shrine Tori no Ichi Festival:
November 12 (Thu) and November 24 (Tue)

Location: Ootori-jinja Shrine, Minami-Ward, Yokohama-City


Shops selling colorfully displayed ceremonial rakes and daruma dolls as well as various booths fill the shrine precincts with an autumn flavor and are crowded until late at night with people wishing for business success and good fortune.

Chigasaki Rainbow Festival: November 15 (Sun)

Location: Chigasaki Satoyama Prefectural Park, Serizawa, Chigasaki-City


This event features on-stage programs at the multipurpose plaza (including band performances and local performing arts), “aozora” open-air markets selling goods such as fresh vegetables, food and drink stands, flea markets, a gardening area, and more.

Zushi Coast Yabusame (Horseback Archery)/
Zushi Yabusame Warrior Procession:
November 22 (Sun)
(Will be postponed to November 29 [Sun] in the case of bad weather)

Location: Central Zushi Coast and other locations, Zushi-City


After the starting ceremony (in the Kamegaoka Hachimangu Shrine precincts), processions of people wearing warrior costumes, yabusame, and children processions will be held. The course proceeds from Kamegaoka Hachimangu Shrine (departure at 10:30) to JR Zushi Station, through Zushi-City, then to the Zushi Coast. Following the “Tenchochikyu” ceremonies (held at the same location on the Zushi Coast as the yabusame), gallant Takeda-style yabusume will take place in the afternoon in front of the ocean starting at 13:30.

Zama Yatoyama Park Festival: November 23 (Holiday)

Location: Zama Yatoyama Prefectural Park, around the Satoyama Experience Hall and the Park Center, Iriya, Zama-City


Experience a wide variety of activities in a park where the landscape of satoyama (boundary area between untouched nature and manmade environments) still remains today. Activities include a small scale bird-watching excursion, open air tea ceremonies, nature games, the making and handing out of mochi (sweet rice cakes), exhibition and nature quiz rally, hayashi orchestra music, cooking over a campfire (tonjiro [miso soup with pork and vegetables], Baumkuchen cakes, and baked sweet potatoes), making toys with natural materials, thinned wood coaster making, and a wild plants exhibition.
