Yokohama Archives of History

Yokohama Archives of History This building houses documents on the history of Yokohama from the mid-19th century when the port was opened, to the mid-20th century. In addition to the permanent exhibition, there are four annual special exhibitions. The older building was the location of the British Consulate until 1972.

Silk Museum

Silk Museum On the first floor of the Silk Center is the Tourist information Center. There is an underground shopping arcade and the 2nd and 3rd floor make up the Silk Museum. Exhibits show the silk manufacturing process, and scarves and other silk products are sold here.

The Japan Newspaper Museum (Newspark) and Broadcast Library

The Japan Newspaper Museum (Newspark) and Broadcast Library The museum specializes in newspapers and introduces the history of newspapers in Japan from the first paper to the present, as well as production processes using actual machines, pictures, and replicas. At the Broadcast Library, you can enjoy around 20,000 old programmes and commercials from the TV and radio, broadcast by NHK and private stations.

Jack, Queen and King's Towers

Jack, Queen and King's Towers
The red brick clock tower of the Yokohama City Port Opening Memorial Hall represents the Jack, the green dome of the Yokohama Customhouse that resembles an Islamic mosque symbolizes the Queen, and the square two-layered tower of the Kanagawa Prefectural Government represents the King.
The towers have been affectionately known by these names because of their uniquely elegant appearance.

Sightseeing Excursion Bus "Akai kutsu"

Sightseeing Excursion Bus Akai kutsu This retro-style red bus, Akai kutsu, leaves Sakuragicho station and takes you round the Minato Mirai area, Chinatown, Yamashita Park, and Harbor Park (Minato no Mieru Oka Koen). On the way, you will be given relevant tourist information for each place. The tour also operates on weekdays. The fare is ¥100 for adults and ¥50 for children. An all-day ticket can also be bought (adults ¥300, children ¥150)

Yokohama Chinatown

Yokohama Chinatown Walk through one of the multi-colored gates and you're in a different world! This world famous Chinatown is home to more than 500 shops and restaurants. You can experience Chinese culture through its cuisine from Canton, Shanghai, Beijing, and Szechuan as well as purchasing foodstuffs and souvenirs. There are 10 gates into Chinatown, known as Pairo, positioned according to the principles of Feng Shui. You can enjoy the guardian deities of direction, such as Deity Seiryu and Deity Suzaku, in the design as well as the beautiful colorings.

DASKA (Yokohama Dai Sekai)

DASKA (Yokohama Dai Sekai) This is an authentic Chinese theme park reproducing the Golden Age of Shanghai in the 1920's and 30's. The space on the 8th floor is full of attractions such as a souvenir shop, restaurants, Kyogeki theater and Niko performances.

Kantei-byo

Kantei-byo Kanwu, one of the heroes in the romance "The Three Kingdoms", is enshrined as the God of Business in this splendid and richly-colored temple. This symbol of Chinatown is beautifully illuminated at night. Admission charged.

NYK Hikawa-maru

Hikawa-maruThe passenger boat NYK Hikawa-maru was formerly called "the Queen of the Pacific" and was in service for 30 years from 1930. This luxurious liner was even traveled on by Charlie Chaplin. The ship contains the Passenger Areas, where you can view former passenger rooms, the Crew Areas, where the crew worked, and the Exhibition Areas, which tell about the NYK Hikawa-maru’s history. The outdoor desk also features deck chairs where you can sit and enjoy the scenery.

Sightseeing Boats

Sightseeing Boats You can enjoy various cruises around the harbor, such as the Sea Bass from Yokohama Station East Exit, via the Red Brick Warehouses to MM21, or the Royal Wing, Yumehama, and Kairyu, all departing from Osanbashi Pier. There are also the Marine Rouge and Marine Shuttle starting from Yamashita Park, Pier Aka Renga or MM21.

Yamashita Park

Yamashita Park This is a romantic park with a view of the Bay Bridge and the boats sailing through the port. There are many monuments showing the rich cultural exchange with other countries, such as the statue of Girl in the Red Shoes, the Indian Water Fountain, and the Guardian of Water presented by the city of San Diego, USA.

Marine Tower

Marine Tower At 106-meter high this is the tallest inland lighthouse in the world. The 2-storey, 100m high observation deck offers a 360 degree panoramic view. The view of the Bay Bridge and Minato Mirai 21 district at night is breathtaking.

Yokohama Doll Museum

Yokohama Doll MuseumThe Yokohama Doll Museum displays over 3,500 dolls from 141 countries around the world. The collection includes dolls from Japan and other countries steeped in local culture, precious dolls made by Living Natural Treasures, and bisque dolls from the Western countries. Exhibitions are also held occasionally.

Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery

Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery Buried here are about 4900 people from about 40 different countries, including those who contributed to the development of Yokohama from the time the port opened to the world in the 19th century. In the Cemetery Museum, there are exhibits of documents explaining the achievements of those interred at the site. The cemetery is private, except for every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from April to October, when the museum is open to the public to raise funds for the upkeep of the grounds.
