Japan Rail Pass

Program Outline

This ticket can be used by foreigners visiting Japan for sightseeing, and allows unlimited travel all JR shinkansen (excluding the "Nozomi"), special express, and express trains. It can also be used on some JR bus lines and the JR West Miyajima Ferry. There are two versions, ordinary and green car. Valid for 7 days, 14 days, or 21 days. The Japan Rail Pass can be purchased before arriving in Japan, and then exchanged after arrival. Please visit the website for more information.

Valid for

Choose from three types: 7 days, 14 days, or 21 days. The first date of usage recorded on the pass cannot be changed.

Available period

On sale all year round. However, this pass is only available to foreign tourists visiting Japan on a short-stay visa. It can also be purchased by persons of Japanese citizenship who are residing abroad with permanent residency status or who are married to a foreign citizen who does not live in Japan.

Cautions

The following cautions apply to using the Japan Rail Pass.

  • Even if you bring your receipt to an exchange office, if you are not in possession of a "short stay" visa as specified by the immigration control law, you cannot exchange your receipt for a Japan Rail Pass.
  • When using train lines operated by private companies, you must pay the required fares/fees for each sector.
  • The receipt cannot be used to ride JR lines prior to exchange. To exchange your receipt, please bring it to your nearest Japan Rail Pass exchange office in Japan.
  • Receipts must be exchanged for the Japan Rail Pass within three months of purchase.
